It Took "X Factor" Sadness, But Britney's "Blackout" Is Finally Platinum - Popdust

The Popdust Files: blackout, britney spears, sales

If The X Factor turns out to be an uncomfortable, tragic and/or regrettable thing for Britney Spearsâ€"it’s a possibility, exactly the sort of looming spectacle people had in mind when the show hired her as a judgeâ€"at least one good thing will have (probably) come out of it: giving the sales of her 2007 mid-crisis, tauntingly titled album Blackout enough of a boost to pass the coveted one-million platinum mark.

"I'm not sure whether the conservatorship tells me I should be happy or frustrated, so here's something in between."

Granted, it’s not proven that The X Factor pushed the album over the markâ€"Billboard reported the figure without clarification, and the album’d been in the high 900Ks for a while. But it’s plausible, isn’t it? People buying Blackout in an attempt to understand what sort of situation was playing out in the headlines. Or because it’s a surprisingly critically acclaimed album. OK, that’d account for five sales maximum, but it’s an interesting thought. To us, at least.

See? Britney looks interested. Simon looks interested, too, or at least as interested as he ever does.

At the very least, now the X Factor promo-reel makers can say that even Britney’s lowest-selling album went platinum. That’s the sort of thing they’d say, right?

All four judges think so.

And since you’ve read this far, it’s probably worth it to give the album a spin. If you haven’t been caught up in the critical talk about it, and if you haven’t dismissed the album alright, you’ll probably be pleased to hear how well the production stands up.

It helped lead to this entire saga, but it's unavoidable.
