Britney Spears to pay father's legal fees as star gets nothing after conservatorship court battle

After years of battling it out in court, Britney Spears' legal battle with her father Jamie Spears has been settled not in Britney's favour, despite her being released of the conservatorship

Britney has settled her case with her father

Britney Spears' legal battle with her father Jamie Spears has ended, but not in the way she hoped.

The singer has settled her case, which originally claimed that Jamie mishandled Britney's estate while he was her conservator for thirteen years. Jamie and his team claimed that nothing he did over the years was illegal.

Britney outlined her life under the conservatorship in her memoir, The Woman In Me, where she said she gave up her "freedom" in order to see her sons, Sean Preston, now 18, and Jayden James, now 17. The Oops I Did It Again singer was under a conservatorship from 2008 to 2021.

The settlement reached leaves Jamie not owing Britney anything and the Toxic singer paying her father's bills. According to TMZ, a source says Britney is "furious" about the settled case.

The outlet claims that Britney was told her lawyer, Mathew Rosengart told her there was a solid case - but now she's left paying over $2 million (about £1.6 million) in Jamie's legal bills. Britney has reportedly shelled out over $4 million (about £3.2 million) to her lawyer in her own fees.

Britney and Jamie's legal battle has been brewing since 2021, after her conservatorship ended. In February, Jamie filed documents in court that his 41-year-old daughter has been using stall tactics to keep the lawsuit going.

In Britney's memoir, released last October, and in court, she claimed that her father forced her on birth control and wouldn't let her get married to her then-boyfriend Sam Asghari. The two eventually married in 2022 but got divorced in 2023, months before her memoir was released.

Her best-selling memoir is in talks to become a film. Reportedly Sony Pictures currently leads the negotiations as Britney's songwriters have been told their music could be used in the adaptation.

A source told The Mirror: "Britney’s book was a groundbreaking best-seller and raised the public’s consciousness with regards to how the entertainment industry and conservatorships work. She’s in advanced talks to turn it into a cinematic release and her songwriters have been informed that some of her songs will be used once it is greenlit. If necessary, the project could become a mini-series in the style of Genius: Aretha."
