Britney Spears poses in yellow off-the-shoulder dress
Like Freddie Mercury, Elton John, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, James Brown, Ray Charles, Whitney Houston, John Lennon, Amy Winehouse and Aretha Franklin before her, Britney Spears is officially getting the big-screen treatment.
Such was the 42-year-old's grip on the music industry, Spears was nicknamed the 'Princess of Pop' in her heyday, firing out hit after irresistible hit with 'Baby One More Time', 'Oops! I Did It Again', 'I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman' and 'Toxic'.
Wicked director Jon M. Chu has the thrilling job of adapting the artist's memoir The Woman in Me, which was published last autumn, but the headache he's currently facing is picking between Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown, The White Lotus' Sydney Sweeney, American Horror Story's Emma Roberts, singers Sabrina Carpenter and Tate MacRae, and TikTok marvel Addison Rae to portray her.

The young actress herself, who married Jon Bon Jovi's son Jake this year, seems drawn to the role, telling Drew Barrymore on her talkshow: "Her story resonates with me. Just growing up in the public eye, watching her videos, watching interviews of her when she was younger.
"I donât know her, but when I look at pictures of her, I feel like I could tell her story in the right way."
Millie Bobby Brown could well be a frontrunner to lead the project (Image:

"I mean, itâs my true dream to play Britney Spears," admitted the star. "Itâs a rumour, but I hope maybe itâll come true. I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to 'In the Zone' and said, 'I cannot leave this room until I memorise every word.'
"I sing Britney to my son in the bath all the time. Iâm always like, 'God, he must think Iâm so weird.' Thatâs some millennial parenting."
Rising popstar Sabrina Carpenter's name has been thrown out there too (Image:

"I don't think there's anyone better than Sabrina Carpenter to play Britney," read one seal of approval on Reddit. "She's one of the better actors Disney has put out, in my opinion. She's got the thousand-watt smile, the insane stage presence, the not-so innocent appeal. Plus she can sing damn well. Feels like no-brainer to me."
As well as Sweeney and McRae's names being bandied about, a lover of Rae's work claimed she "needs to play" Spears, end of.
Somebody else reluctantly concurred: "I hate that this is maybe the only person I could agree with in a small way but I don't immediately hate the idea. She would capture her looks and charm quite well."
Who would you choose?
