Howard Stern ripped into pop queen Britney Spears this week at a press conference promoting the new season of "America's Got Talent".
When a reporter asked Stern for his thoughts on the news that Britney Spears had signed on as the new judge on Simon Cowell's "X Factor," Stern gave the room a taste of what it will be like to see his unique brand of bluntness in action.
"I think itâs a wonderful decision," said Stern. "You know Britney still thinks the Earth is flat. I think that we're going to tune in to see if she can function through the thing. As far as any real criticism, I think Simon and L.A. Reid will be doing that. I think Britney is going to stand there and eat a lollipop and wear a sexy outfit. I donât anticipate great opinions from her. I think sheâs going to sit there like J.Lo and [say], 'You're wonderful. You're terrific. Do you think I could get a perfume endorsement out of this? Do you think I could get to perform on the show?' I think thatâs what itâs about, but I think it will be interesting. I will tune in to see what kind of train wreck she is. Absolutely."
Stern has been fiercely critical of this season of "American Idol," saying that the judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler are now the "stars" of the show, rather than exciting, newly discovered talent. Stern said that he and his "America's Got Talent" co-stars Sharon Osborne and Howie Mandel would set a new standard for reality competition television:
"IÂ think we represent the best judging panel on TV," said Stern. "I can't wait for America to see it."
"America's Got Talent" featuring Howard Stern premieres Monday, May 14th at 8PM on NBC.
