'American Idol' Fans Approve Of 'Living Legend' Mariah Carey - MTV.com

"American Idol" has been in headline overdrive in recent weeks, as Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler confirmed their departure from the judging panel. And with pop heavyweights like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera part of rival singing competitions, "Idol" had to come out with the big guns for season 12.

"Idol" certainly answered the call Monday (July 23), announcing Mariah Carey as the show's next judge. Last week, days before the news was made official, MTV News hit the streets to see which celeb would make a great "Idol" judge and fans couldn't stop raving about Miss Carey.

"Mariah Carey brings so much experience," Matthew Cooke explained to MTV. "Her music has touched generations and generations. Still, to this day, you can play her anywhere and people will be able to relate to her music."

Unlike the criticism Britney Spears or Paula Abdul received for being less-than-stellar singing talents, Carey's voice is inarguably one of the best ever. "I think she's a great singer, so she could definitely provide some great input," one fan told us.

"She's still a living legend," Kayla Harvard exclaimed, adding, "She's one of the last really big living-legend divas left."

Another viewer strayed away from Carey's long-running history in the game and simply suggested the singer solely because "she's such a great vocalist. I just think her opinion would count more than someone who doesn't sing and is not a vocalist," she said.

"Idol" comes at a fitting time in Carey's career, as she is set to embark on a brand-new chapter of music with her upcoming album. Over the weekend, the superstar diva took to Twitter to announce the project's lead single, "Triumphant," and guest spots from Rick Ross and Meek Mill. Much like with Lopez, "Idol" will serve as a promotional vehicle for Carey and her business ventures.
