"The Voice" U.S. coach Christina Aguilera has publicly commented for the first time about Britney Spears being a judge on "The X Factor" U.S.
Aguilera has been a coach on "The Voice" U.S. since 2011. Spears was named a judge on "The X Factor" U.S. in May 2012. And adding to the diva judge rivalry, Mariah Carey became a judge on "American Idol" in July 2012.
In an exclusive interview with "Extra," Aguilera took the high road when talking about the competition: "Britney's so talented ... I mean, she's a pro. She's been at it for a number of years now. We did grow up together, basically. It's actually cool that these strong women are joining the club and they're going to have fun."
Aguilera was equally complimentary about Carey becoming an "American Idol" judge: รขI just found out about it last night. The news is fresh. I love how all these artists are coming together from all the experience that we've had, and we're able to take that, and sort of feed this new wave of talent coming up. I think it's great. We're all coming from such knowledegable backgrounds."
While Spears and Aguilera (who both released their first albums in 1999) have had a cordial rivalry over the years (dating back to when they were both on "The Mickey Mouse Club"), things have not been as friendly between Aguilera and Carey. Tabloids have reported that Carey (who hit it big with her first album in 1990) has felt that Aguilera rips off her style of singing, and Carey has complained about Aguilera behind the scenes.
Someone else who is not shy about blasting a rival is "The X Factor" executive producer Simon Cowell, who has said in several interviews that he wants to "destroy the competition." In recent interviews, he has taken aim at "The Voice" and trashed the show by saying it is a poor imitation of "The X Factor."
Ultimately, what matters is how viewers respond to these shows. The proof is in the ratings.
