A new video promo for the second season of "X Factor" seems to relay the suggestion that Britney Spears might not be the cute, sexy, and kind pop star America has grown accustomed to over the years. But is it too much to think that Britney can go from "America's sweetheart" to a heartless Simon Cowell wannabe?
There is the recent promo for "X Factor" that suggests that Britney Spears just might have a bit of a mean streak in her.
In the promotional video, the narrator asks if Spears has been spending to much time with Simon Cowell, the notorious "Britain's Got Talent," "American Idol," and "X Factor" judge that has for years been the epitome of unfiltered opinion when adjudicated talent. The question is then followed by the pop sensation delivering lines to auditioners that seem to come right out of the Simon Cowell guidebook on how to offend a singer and sound like you mean it.
But is it real or is it Fox Television marketing their new season of the "X Factor?"
Reality TV Magazine reported in June that Spears thinks that Simon Cowell is still the "toughest judge." But what does she think of her own judging qualities?
“I think I’m a fair judge," she said. "Sometimes it’s hard because I know what they’ve been through and being so young and wanting to achieving their dreams."
As Lisa Princ (of Reality TV Magazine) pointed out: But viewers thought that Simon got rid of Paula Abdul after last season. So what's the deal?
The deal is that Britney Spears and Demi Lovato have joined the "X Factor" for Season 2, replacing overly nice Nicole Scherzinger and overly dreamy Paula Abdul. Instead, he appeared to have replaced the two female judges with younger copies.
But that was before Spears stalked off stage during an audition in Greensboro, N.C., where a man in drag apparently performed a tribute using her 1999 hit "(You Drive Me) Crazy" that she didn't appreciate. According to People.com, she looked "stunned," then got up and walked off stage, followed by a supportive Lovato and L. A. Reid (who is returning for his second season on the show).
Cowell was left as the only judge to speak and told the singer that he didn't think Spears understood the song as a tribute. But after the guy explained how much trouble he'd had just getting to the audition, Spears returned to the judges panel and said, "I really respect the tribute."
A report from TMZ revealed that Spears walked off stage during the first rehearsals as well. People connected with the show told TMZ that she was simply taking a break, which was also what Spears said later in a Twitter post. But according to TMZ, she was upset over hearing her song "Hold It Against Me" being butchered and that she missed the next several auditions.
So is Britney Spears a thin-skinned diva or a "fair" protege of brutally honest Simon Cowell? Are those edited clips in the promo video what we can expect from the "Toxic" singer or are they exceptions to her normal demeanor? At this stage it is difficult to say. But the curiosity factor has certainly intensified with regard to how the new "X Factor" judge will approach her job.
The two-night "X Factor" premiere airs on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 12-13, on Fox Television at 8:00 p.m. EST.
