In July, Britney Spears returned with a new single titled “Mind Your Business.” The tune was another collaboration with Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.I.Am, with whom Spears has worked numerous times before. The track was highly anticipated, but once it dropped, it received a tepid response from critics and many casual fans. Now, it seems the tune won’t become a proper hit, which both stars were hoping for.

“Mind Your Business” arrived on a number of Billboard charts last week, but it missed the most important one. Now, it’s clear that the cut doesn’t stand a very good chance of reaching the list, which means its future is not bright.

The Spears/Will.I.Am collab missed out on appearing on the Hot 100, Billboard’s ranking of the most-consumed songs in the U.S. The cut did manage to hit several other lists, but top-tier artists like these two are always looking to send their latest works right to the tally, hopefully opening toward the summit. Missing out on doing so, and then seeing the track fall in consumption just one week after it arrived, seems to suggest that it will never place on the Hot 100.

The performance of “Mind Your Business” is not typical for Spears. Her last single not only reached the Hot 100 without issue, it became a huge hit immediately. In the summer of 2022, the singer returned after a hiatus of several years with “Hold Me Closer,” a duet with Elton John. The tune opened inside the top 10 on the Hot 100, giving both chart-toppers another big win on the tally.

“Mind Your Business” was expected to perform better than it did by many, considering the sheer amount of star power attached to the tune. Both Spears and Will.I.Am have conquered the Hot 100 many times in the past, and they’ve proved that when they work together, magic can happen. The pair scored a huge global win a decade ago with “Scream & Shout,” an electro collaboration that peaked inside the top 10 on the Hot 100 as well. But sadly, it now very much looks like they aren’t going to replicate that win.

“Mind Your Business” did perform well on a handful of charts, though not the most competitive one. The track blasted onto the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs ranking at No. 8, bringing both musicians back to the highest reaches of the ranking. It also opened at No. 1 on the Dance/Electronic Song Sales list. The tune nearly became a top 10 on the all-genre Digital Song Sales roster, though it stalled at No. 12. Now, one week later, “Mind Your Business” isn’t present on any of those charts, which suggests that fans have moved on and that the track isn’t gaining any ground.
