What Did Emma Roberts Say About Rumors Of Starring In Britney Spears Biopic? Find Out As Actress Clarifies

Emma Roberts is manifesting the lead role in a Britney Spears biopic. While the rumors of the actress portraying the role of the singer had been making rounds on the internet, Roberts clarified that the reports were not true.

In a conversation with Cosmo, the Holidate star talked about her dream role after the singer's assistant claimed that the actress has been more than prepared for the role of Spears.

While talking to the entertainment portal, the actress shared that she used to listen to Spears' songs while closing the doors of her room when young. Roberts elaborated, "I was like, I love her assistant."

She further said, "I mean, it's my true dream to play Britney Spears. It's a rumor, but I hope maybe it'll come true. I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to In the Zone and said, 'I cannot leave this room until I memorize every word.'"

Roberts also stated that she used to croon Britney's songs to her son during his bath time. "I mean, I sing Britney to my son in the bath all the time. I'm always like, 'God, he must think I'm so weird.' That's some millennial parenting," said the Madame Web actress.

The Toxic crooner's longtime assistant was in awe of Roberts' stardom as a kid after she saw her in Disney shows, including The All New Mickey Mouse Club and Nickelodeon's Unfabulous.

The personal assistant of Spears, Culotta, also claimed that she thinks Timothee Chalamet could play the singer's ex, Justin Timberlake, and Drew Barrymore could play the role of an assistant.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Spears announced earlier this month that she will be collaborating with Platt. Taking to her X account, the singer wrote, "Excited to share with my fans that I've been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He's always made my favorite movies... stay tuned."

As for the singer's memoir, The Woman In Me, the book was atop the rankings and was considered a New York Times bestseller. The book is a look back into Britney's life from her time in Mississippi to Louisana and later her journey of becoming a singer by releasing her first studio album in 1999.

Emma Roberts Wants Britney Spears Biopic Rumors to Come True

Emma Roberts says it would be her dream to play Britney Spears in the recently announced biopic movie.

On August 1, 2024, it was announced that Spears' 2023 memoir novel, The Woman in Me was being turned into a feature film for Universal Pictures. Jon M. Chu — known for helming 2018's Crazy Rich Asians, 2021's In the Heights, the upcoming Wicked adaptations, and more — has been tapped to direct the movie, while no casting announcements have yet been made.

Shortly after the announcement that the movie is in the works was made, Spears' former longtime assistant, Felicia Culotta, told TMZ that she thinks Roberts would be a good choice to play the iconic singer.

Speaking with Cosmopolitan, Roberts was asked what she thought about the idea of playing Spears.

"I was like, I love her assistant. I mean, it's my true dream to play Britney Spears," she said. "It's a rumor, but I hope maybe it'll come true. I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to In the Zone and said, 'I cannot leave this room until I memorize every word.'"

She added, "I mean, I sing Britney to my son in the bath all the time. I'm always like, 'God, he must think I'm so weird.' That's some millennial parenting."

Roberts is known for starring in American Horror Story and for playing Chanel Oberlin in Scream Queens. Her filmography includes 2006's Aquamarine, 2007's Nancy Drew, 2010's Valentine's Day, 2011's Scream 4, 2013's We're the Millers, 2015's The Blackcoat's Daughter, 2016's Nerve, 2020's The Hunt, and 2024's Madame Web, among other titles.

A release date for the Britney Spears movie has not been announced at this time. The film will be produced by Marc Platt.

Britney Spears 'Refusing to Reunite With Sick Dad': She Will 'Never Forgive Him for Controlling Her Life Through Conservatorship'

Aug. 31 2024, Published 12:37 p.m. ET

Britney Spears' father's health issues aren't softening her heart.

Radaronline.com can reveal the 42-year-old is still furious that Jamie Spears controlled her life — and allegedly profited — during her 13-year conservatorship, per an insider.

In December, the 72-year-old had to have an infected leg amputated and has had serious kidney and colon issues over the years.

The insider said: "She's sad for him, but it's not that simple to just forgive and forget the way he destroyed her life."

The pop singer has become known for her outlandish and sultry content on social media following the end of her 13-year conservatorship.

They added: "It's an extremely complicated and painful situation."

Complicating the situation, the pop star's estranged sons, Sean, 18, and 17-year-old Jayden, with ex Kevin Federline, have made peace with their grandfather.

Jamie was banned from seeing the kids for three years after he busted down a door and shook Sean during a 2019 argument.

As RadarOnline.com previously reported, Federline filed a police report in 2019 against the pop star's father for laying hands on him.

Sources claim Britney is upset that her father has a relationship with her sons while she does not.

In the report, the unemployed ex-backup dancer claimed Jamie also laid his hands on one of his grandsons after busting down the door.

Federline's attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, explained why the boys had reestablished contact with Jamie, stating: "The boys miss their grandfather. They have forgiven him."

However, contact between Britney and her sons hasn't made the same progress.

The source further added it "hurts" the Toxic singer how her father is "somehow more important" to her children than she is.

"It's a kick in the teeth," they said.

In July, we reported how Britney attempted to reconcile with her children, allegedly having last spoken with the boys on Mother's Day.

A source told Us Weekly: "Britney has been reaching out to her sons more and wants to start spending more time with them when they are ready."

The two teenagers live in Hawaii with their father, who has full custody of the two.

While rumors briefly circulated that the Lucky singer's relationship with her boys was already on the mend and she planned to visit them on the island, other insiders said it isn't true.

An insider said: "Years of aberrant behavior and troubling conduct can't be easily erased. There's no evidence things have gotten better."

In 2022, Jayden expressed hope for him and his mother's relationship to be whole again, telling ITV News: "I 100% think this can be fixed. It's just going to take a lot of time and effort."

"When she gets better, I really want to see her again. Maybe one day we can sit down like this and talk again."

The Woman In Me, Britney's New York Times bestseller entered a studio bidding war after its release. Deadline reports Universal secured the rights, with Wicked director Jon M. Chu attached to develop and direct.

The Woman in Me follows the multi-platinum Grammy Award-winning pop stars' rise and fall from grace and return to the spotlight. From her upbringing in Mississippi and Louisiana, her rise to stardom with the '90s hit album Baby One More Time, to her complicated family and personal relationships, conservatorship, and eventual freedom.

While Britney hasn't dropped a name for her possible biopic yet, people in the circle have tossed some names into the hat.

If you didn't know, Britney's former longtime assistant, Felicia Culotta, previously suggested to TMZ that Emma take on the role. According to TMZ, Felicia thinks Emma's child stardom on Nickelodeon's Unfabulous parallels Britney's time on Disney's The Mickey Mouse Club.

Aside from suggesting Emma for the pop star, Britney's longtime assistant had a couple more surprising proposals for the biopic's casting.

Revlon Claims Its Own Execs ‘Sabotaged’ Britney Spears Perfume Partnership In New Lawsuit

Revlon is suing several former employees over allegations that they "sabotaged" the company's decades-old fragrance partnership with Britney Spears and took the business to a competitor.

In a case filed Monday (Aug. 26) in Manhattan federal court, attorneys for Revlon and subsidiary Elizabeth Arden claim that four ex-staffers stole trade secrets and breached their contracts when they jumped ship to upstart rival Give Back Beauty and took the Britney account with them.

Though an initial delay in Spears re-signing the 20-year perfume partnership deal was "attributed to Ms. Spears being preoccupied with other matters," Revlon claims it eventually realized that its own executives had been orchestrating a corporate heist.

"Revlon and Elizabeth Arden were completely unaware that Revlon's own team was actively sabotaging one of their most valuable licensing relationships," the company's lawyers claim.

The case does not name Spears as a defendant nor accuse her of any wrongdoing.

As defendants, the lawsuit names the four employees — Vanessa Kidd, Dominick Romeo, Reid Mulvihill and Ashley Fass — as well as Give Back Beauty itself. None of the individual defendants immediately returned messages seeking comment on the lawsuit's allegations.

In a statement to Billboard, Give Back Beauty strongly denied the allegations: "The claims that Give Back Beauty engaged in any type of improper conduct are entirely without merit and are no way supported by the facts. We will defend both our company and our employees against these allegations and will respond more fully to them through the appropriate legal channels."

Then at the peak of her powers, Spears signed a deal with Elizabeth Arden in 2004 to develop branded fragrances and other cosmetics. When she released "Curious" later that year, it quickly became the top selling fragrance of the year and reportedly pulled in more than $100 million in sales.

Britney Spears Says She Will 'Never Return to the Music Industry'

01/03/2024

According to a 2013 report by the Hollywood Reporter, "Curious" had sold more than 500 million bottles over its first decade, and the overall Spears-Arden partnership, featuring many other scents, was pulling in $30 million a year in sales.

According to the new lawsuit, Revlon had historically renewed its partnership with Britney in five-year intervals, and the latest iteration was set to expire at the end of 2024. When negotiations began late last year, the company says it had "every expectation that the relationship would continue."

But according to the lawsuit, Give Back Beauty had launched a "campaign to obtain the Britney Brands fragrance business," including contacting the Elizabeth Arden staffers as early as February: "This was obviously a carefully planned and executed grab by GBB for the Revlon fragrance business."

Though Revlon says it struck a tentative deal with Britney's team, the agreement had not been finalized in May, when staffers who had worked on the deal began "decamping to GBB." Less than a month later, the lawsuit says, Give Back Beauty inked its own deal with Britney.

"The speed with which Britney Brands signed its deal with GBB was unprecedented for the Britney Brands organization and could not have been accomplished without the benefit of the Revlon employees' deep knowledge of the misappropriated proprietary information about the relationship and GBB's unlawful utilization of that information," Revlon's lawyers write.

The lawsuit takes particular aim at Kidd, a senior vice president for global marketing of fragrances who had spent years working on the Britney account and was allegedly the first to jump ship.

"At the same time that defendant Kidd was negotiating with Britney Brands on Revlon's behalf, she had interviewed and accepted a job offer with GBB," the company's lawyers write. "Kidd effectively acted as a double-agent, assisting GBB in taking the Britney Brands business away from plaintiffs while she was charged with cementing an extension for Elizabeth Arden and purported to be doing so."

The case claims that before she left, Kidd accessed more than 250 electronic files that contained proprietary information, including about the Britney partnership. Revlon says the "logical inference" is that she was "arming herself and her new employer" with info that could be used to "rapidly recreate the supply and distribution chains Elizabeth Arden had spent 20 years developing."

In technical terms, the lawsuit accuses the ex-staffers and Give Back Beauty of theft of trade secrets and so-called tortious interference with their business and contracts. It also accuses the individual employees of breach of their contracts and breach of their duty of loyalty to Revlon.

In a statement to Billboard, Revlon stressed that the lawsuit did not accuse Spears or her team of wrongdoing and said "we value our 20-year partnership and wish Britney all the best."

"As a company, we will always take steps to protect our intellectual property," Revlon said in the statement. "We have filed this complaint because it became clear to us that GBB and the four former employees named in the suit unlawfully used Revlon's proprietary information and trade secrets — and we are confident in the merits of our case."

Emma Roberts Weighs in on Britney Spears Biopic Casting Rumors

Emma Roberts Engaged to Actor Cody John!

Emma Roberts knows she'd be lucky to play Britney Spears.

The American Horror Story actress was honored by the fact that Felicia Culotta, Britney's former assistant, recently suggested she would be the perfect person to capture the "Toxic" singer's essence in the upcoming biopic based on Britney's memoir The Woman in Me.

"I was like, 'I love her assistant,'" Emma gushed to Cosmopolitan in an interview published Aug. 29. "I mean, it's my true dream to play Britney Spears."

And while the 33-year-old confirmed that the casting is definitely just a rumor at the moment, she's hopeful that "maybe it'll come true." Especially since her fandom for Britney runs deep.

"I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to In the Zone," she recalled, "and said, 'I cannot leave this room until I memorize every word.'"

And if called upon for the biopic, Emma—who shares 3-year-old son Rhodes with ex Garrett Hedlund—is pretty sure her lyrical memory will kick back in.

"I sing Britney to my son in the bath all the time," she shared. "I'm always like, 'God, he must think I'm so weird.'"

As she joked, "That's some millennial parenting."

Information about Britney's biopic is still scarce, although the "Womanizer" singer previously shared she was thrilled about the movie, especially as it meant she got to work alongside Wicked and La La Land producer Marc Platt, father to a Tony-winner Ben Platt.

"Excited to share with my fans that I've been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt," she wrote on X Aug. 1. "He's always made my favorite movies … stay tuned."

Wicked director Jon M. Chu is attached to direct the film, which will follow Britney's life from her roots in Mississippi and Louisiana, through her growth as one of the most celebrated popstars in the world, according to Deadline.

The Woman in Me has been a bestseller since it was first released in 2023, with the 42-year-old documenting her life in the spotlight, including revelations about her family, as well as exes Justin Timberlake and Kevin Federline.

Keep reading for the biggest bombshells from the memoir.

First Kiss With Justin Timberlake

Britney Spears met Justin Timberlake when they were Mouseketeers on Disney Channel's The Mickey Mouse Club in the early 1990s along with Christina Aguilera and slightly older talents including Keri Russell, Ryan Gosling and Tony Lucca.

Though it would be some years before they dated, falling for each other when she went on tour with *NSYNC, Britney writes that she and Justin shared their first kiss while playing Truth or Dare during a cast sleepover with—insert irony here—a Janet Jackson song playing in the background.

Britney Had an Abortion While Dating Justin Timberlake

Among the devastating low points Britney describes about dating Justin, she shares that she had a medical abortion because his position was that they were both too young to become parents. She underwent the process at home, she writes, recalling Justin lying on the bathroom floor with her and strumming his guitar during what she calls "one of the most agonizing things I have ever experienced in my life."

She still isn't sure if she made the right choice, adding, "If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it. And yet Justin was so sure that he didn't want to be a father."

E! News reached out to Justin's rep and did not immediately hear back.

But as various Justin-centric anecdotes in Britney's book made headlines ahead of its release, a source shared that the 42-year-old is working on new music, plus he and wife Jessica Biel are feeling great and keeping busy with sons Silas, 8, and Phineas, 2.

Justin Dumped Her Over Text Message

According to Britney, Justin is in the club of celebrities who've ended relationships with the equivalent of a digital Post-It.

She was so "devastated," she recalls, she "could barely speak for months."

Britney went back home to Kentwood, La., to recover—and, post-breakup, she writes, Justin flew out there to personally deliver a letter he wrote and had framed that concluded, "I can't breathe without you."

The Demoralizing Assumption That Britney Cheated on Justin

Recalling the insinuations in Justin's "Cry Me a River" video that she had cheated on him, Britney writes of having to deal with the fallout, feeling "comatose in Louisiana" while her ex was "happily running around Hollywood."

She points to her cringe-inducing November 2003 interview with Diane Sawyer, arranged by her father and manager, in which the journalist grilled her about the pain she supposedly caused Justin as her "breaking point."

"I felt like I had been exploited," she writes, "set up in front of the whole world."

The Extent of Britney's Unfaithfulness

As was rumored years ago, Britney admits to making out with dancer-choreographer Wade Robson at a bar one night while she was dating Justin. But she attributes the gossip that Justin was cheating on her for pushing her into that mindset.

Otherwise, she writes, she was faithful to Justin.

Adderall Was Britney's "Drug of Choice"

Britney maintains that, during the days when it looked like she was partying hard with Paris HiltonLindsay Lohan, et al., she didn't have a drinking problem, but used the ADHD medication Adderall to get high and enjoy "a few hours of feeling less depressed."

Hooking Up With Colin Farrell

It wasn't much of a secret 20 years ago that something was going on between Britney and Colin Farrell, and she describes their fling as a physically intense couple of weeks.

"Brawl is the only word for it—we were all over each other, grappling so passionately it was like we were in a street fight," Britney writes.

However, she admittedly wasn't "over Justin" when she was Colin's date to the Jan. 28, 2003, premiere of The Recruit, where the Irish actor told reporters they were "just mates" and not dating, but "she's a sweet, sweet girl."

Britney writes in The Woman in Me, "But for a brief moment in time, I did think there could be something there. The disappointments in my romantic life were just one part of how isolated I became. I felt so awkward all the time."

E! News has reached out to Colin's rep for comment but did not hear back.

The Truth About Her Marriage to Pal Jason Alexander

Britney was bored and "just honestly very drunk," she writes, when she and childhood friend Jason Alexander swapped vows in Las Vegas in January 2004. The union was annulled 55 hours later.

She marveled over her family's reaction—"like I'd started World War III"—but it was "innocent fun" as far as she was concerned.

(Meanwhile, Jason was arrested and pleaded no contest to trespassing on Britney's more consequential wedding day when she married Sam Asghari at home on June 9, 2022.)

The Night Britney Shaved Her Head

The unforgettable night in February 2007 when Britney walked into a Los Angeles-area salon and buzzed all her hair off was a response to the constant objectification she'd been subjected to since coming of age in the spotlight. (She notes elsewhere in the book that she went on Prozac around the time Oops...I Did It Again was blowing up to deal with the heightened scrutiny.)

"I'd been looked up and down, had people telling me what they thought of my body, since I was a teenager," she writes. "Shaving my head and acting out were my ways of pushing back."

She was also "out of my mind with grief" while locked in a custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline over their sons, Sean and Jayden (who are now 18 and 17).

"Flailing those weeks without my children, I lost it, over and over again," she recalls. "I didn't even really know how to take care of myself." She famously smacked a paparazzo's car with an umbrella, her new haircut adding to the drama of it all, and remembers her thought process at the time growing increasingly childlike while she was still "in the throes of severe postpartum depression" and dealing with the end of her marriage.

Kevin was later granted sole physical custody of their kids on Oct. 1, 2007.

Why Britney Didn't Fight the Conservatorship Earlier

Britney was placed in a conservatorship on Feb. 1, 2008—initially after a series of emergencies, including the star being put on two 5150 holds in January 2008, but then it was extended indefinitely.

The "...Baby One More Time" singer recalls that she "begged the court to appoint literally anyone else" than her father, Jamie Spears, as her conservator. (Lawyer Andrew Wallet was co-conservator until March 2019.)

But she says she gave up the legal fight to free herself early on so she could be reunited with her kids as soon as possible.

"My freedom in exchange for naps with my children—it was a trade I was willing to make," she writes. "There is nothing I love more—nothing more improtant to me on this earth—than my children. I'd lay down my life for them."

Britney the Person Withered While the Brand Continued to Bloom

Britney describes the alleged confines of the conservatorship as being too "sick to choose my own boyfriend and yet somehow healthy enough to appear on sitcoms and morning shows, and to perform for thousands of people in a different part of the world every week!"

Eventually, Britney writes, she "began to think that [dad Jamie] saw me as put on the earth for no other reason than to help their cash flow."

She alleges she wasn't even allowed to change her set list when she wanted to during her wildly successful Las Vegas residency at Planet Hollywood.

"My music was my life," she writes, "and the conservatorship was deadly for that; it crushed my soul."

Jamie, who took some time away from being co-conservator in 2019 while he dealt with health issues and then stepped down for good in September 2021, has stated multiple times in the past that he believed the decisions he was making were in Britney's best interest.

The Crush of the Conservatorship

From her portioned-out medication to the settings on her iPhone, Britney writes, "Everything was scrutinized and controlled. Everything."

Including, she alleges, her weight. "If I thought getting criticized about my body in the press was bad, it hurt even more from my own father," she writes. "He repeatedly told me I looked fat and that I was going to have to do something about it."

While she was notably silent about the circumstances of her life during most of the 13 years she spent in the conservatorship, Britney alleges she did try to say something...once.

"I even mentioned the conservatorship on a talk show in 2016," she writes, "but somehow that part of the interview didn't make it to the air. Huh. How interesting."

Falling Out With Jamie Lynn Spears

During what Britney describes as her involuntary trip to rehab in early 2019—"My father said that if I didn't go, then I'd have to go to court, and I'd be embarrassed," she writes—she recalls being prescribed lithium and being kept there "against my will" for months.

"I couldn't go outside," she continues. "I couldn't drive a car. I had to give blood weekly. I couldn't take a bath in private. I couldn't shut the door to my room."

From the facility, Britney texted Jamie Lynn Spears, pleading for help, she writes. Her little sister's response, per the book, was, "Stop fighting it. There's nothing you can do about it, so stop fighting it."

Britney felt betrayed, writing, "I didn't understand how Jamie Lynn and our father had developed such a good relationship. She knew I was reaching out to her for help...I felt like she should have taken my side."

In early 2022 the siblings publicly sparred over Jamie Lynn's memoir, Things I Should Have Said.

Jamie Lynn "rushed out salacious stories about me, many of them hurtful and outrageous," Britney reiterates in her book. But, she concludes, she loves her sis, adding, "I'm working to feel more compassion than anger toward her and toward everyone who I feel has wronged me. It's not that easy."

E! News has reached out to Jamie Lynn for comment. She said on E!'s Daily Pop in 2022 that she and Britney "go back and forth, but at the end of the day, the love and support will always be there."

Her Introduction to #FreeBritney

Britney notes that it was during her 2019 rehab stay that she first saw YouTube clips, courtesy of a nurse at the facility, alerting her to the existence of the unofficial but vigilant #FreeBritney movement.

As the years went by and the public discussion around whether she still should be in a conservatorship intensified, Britney kept up with the news.

"Seeing the documentaries about me was rough," she writes. "I understand that everyone's heart was in the right place, but I was hurt that some old friends spoke to filmmakers without consulting me first." She adds, "There was so much guessing about what I must have thought or felt."

Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images

Where Britney Was When Her Conservatorship Was Terminated

When Jamie was removed as co-conservator in September 2021, "I felt relief sweep over me," Britney recalls. "The man who had scared me as a child and ruled over me as an adult, who had done more than anyone to undermine my self-confidence, was no longer in control of my life."

She was at a resort in Tahiti on Nov. 12, 2021, when her lawyer called to tell her a judge had terminated the conservatorship entirely.

Those Naked Instagram Posts

Britney relishes being free to post whatever she wants on social media now, including the occasional strategically censored nude selfie

"I know that a lot of people don't understand why I love taking pictures of myself naked or in new dresses," she explains. "But I think if they'd been photographed by other people thousands of times, prodded and posed for other people's approval, they'd understand that I get a lot of joy from posing the way I feel sexy and taking my own picture, doing whatever I want with it."

Gallery Book

Britney writes that she has suffered "physical and emotional damage" from being in the conservatorship, and still gets migraines.

"I don't think my family understands the real damage that they did," she writes.

But she doesn't take freedom for granted, whether that means "taking a break from Instagram without people calling 911" or "being able to make mistakes, and learning from them."

It means "I don't have to perform for anyone—onstage or offstage," she writes. "Freedom means that I get to be as beautifully imperfect as everyone else. And freedom means the ability, and the right, to search for joy, in my own way, on my own terms."

Emma Roberts is ready to find The Woman In Me.

In an interview with Cosmopolitan published on Thursday, August 29, Roberts said it's her "true dream" to play Britney Spears on the big screen.

Roberts' comments come after Spears' former assistant, Felicia Culotta, tipped the actress, 33, for the role in a new biopic based on Spears' best-selling memoir.

"I was like, 'I love her assistant,'" Roberts reacted to Culotta name-dropping her.

"I mean, it's my true dream to play Britney Spears. It's a rumor, but I hope maybe it'll come true," Roberts added.

The American Horror Story: Delicate star revealed that she is a huge fan of Spears' music — naming one album she loved in particular.

"I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to In the Zone and said, 'I cannot leave this room until I memorize every word,'" Roberts said, referencing Spears' 2003 album which featured the hit songs "Me Against the Music," "Toxic" and "Everytime."

Earlier this month, it was reported that Universal Pictures had won the rights to adapt The Woman In Me, Spears' tell-all memoir published in October 2023. Wicked director Jon M. Chu is attached to direct with veteran producer Marc Platt on board to produce, according to multiple reports.

On August 1, Spears teased the movie adaptation of her autobiography via X, writing: "Excited to share with my fans that I've been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He's always made my favorite movies … stay tuned 🌹🎥"

In her bombshell memoir, Spears, 42, opened up about her high-profile relationship with Justin Timberlake and revealed that she had an abortion while they were dating in the early 2000s.

"But Justin definitely wasn't happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren't ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young," Spears wrote.

"I'm sure people will hate me for this, but I agreed not to have the baby," she continued. "I don't know if that was the right decision. If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it. And yet Justin was so sure that he didn't want to be a father."

Spears also admitted to cheating on Timberlake with choreographer Wade Robson.

"We were out one night and we went to a Spanish bar. We danced and danced. I made out with him that night," Spears wrote.

Everything Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears Have Said About Cheating Accusations

"I was loyal to Justin for years, only had eyes for him with that one exception, which I admitted to him," she continued. "That night was chalked up to something that will happen when you're as young as we were, and Justin and I moved past it and stayed together."

The "Lucky" singer accused Timberlake of being unfaithful to her during their relationship, too. "There were a couple of times during our relationship when I knew Justin had cheated on me," she wrote. "Especially because I was so infatuated and so in love, I let it go, even though the tabloids seemed determined to rub my face in it."

Emma Roberts eyes Britney Spears biopic role: 'It’s my true dream'

Emma Roberts has expressed her desire to play Britney Spears in a upcoming biopic based on the pop star's memoir, The Woman In Me.

In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, Roberts revealed that playing Spears is her "true dream," adding fuel to rumors that she may be in line for the role.

The biopic, which is currently in development with Universal Pictures, will be adapted from Spears' best-selling memoir, released in October 2023.

The book offers a candid look at Spears' life, including her high-profile relationship with Justin Timberlake, her struggles with fame, and her experiences with abortion and infidelity.

Roberts, a longtime fan of Spears' music, expressed, "I mean, it's my true dream to play Britney Spears. It's a rumor, but I hope maybe it'll come true."

"I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to In the Zone and said, 'I cannot leave this room until I memorize every word,'" Roberts revealed, referring Spears' 2003 album.

She went on to share, "I sing Britney to my son in the bath all the time. I'm always like, 'God, he must think I'm so weird.' That's some millennial parenting."

While no official casting announcements have been made, Emma Roberts' interest in the role has sparked excitement among fans.

Britney Spears' former assistant, Felicia Culotta, previously suggested Roberts for the role, citing her resemblance to the pop star.

Britney Spears poses in yellow off-the-shoulder dress

Like Freddie Mercury, Elton John, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, James Brown, Ray Charles, Whitney Houston, John Lennon, Amy Winehouse and Aretha Franklin before her, Britney Spears is officially getting the big-screen treatment.

Such was the 42-year-old's grip on the music industry, Spears was nicknamed the 'Princess of Pop' in her heyday, firing out hit after irresistible hit with 'Baby One More Time', 'Oops! I Did It Again', 'I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman' and 'Toxic'.

Wicked director Jon M. Chu has the thrilling job of adapting the artist's memoir The Woman in Me, which was published last autumn, but the headache he's currently facing is picking between Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown, The White Lotus' Sydney Sweeney, American Horror Story's Emma Roberts, singers Sabrina Carpenter and Tate MacRae, and TikTok marvel Addison Rae to portray her.

When the Spears project was initially greenlit, fans were quick to mention Brown's name on Reddit, with two of them writing: "So... It's gonna be Millie Bobby Brown isn't it? I remember that being floated as a [hypothetical] casting" and "What about Millie Bobby Brown."

The young actress herself, who married Jon Bon Jovi's son Jake this year, seems drawn to the role, telling Drew Barrymore on her talkshow: "Her story resonates with me. Just growing up in the public eye, watching her videos, watching interviews of her when she was younger.

"I don’t know her, but when I look at pictures of her, I feel like I could tell her story in the right way."

Millie Bobby Brown could well be a frontrunner to lead the project (

Roberts recently addressed the Spears rumours during an interview with Cosmo, too.

"I mean, it’s my true dream to play Britney Spears," admitted the star. "It’s a rumour, but I hope maybe it’ll come true. I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to 'In the Zone' and said, 'I cannot leave this room until I memorise every word.'

"I sing Britney to my son in the bath all the time. I’m always like, 'God, he must think I’m so weird.' That’s some millennial parenting."

Rising popstar Sabrina Carpenter's name has been thrown out there too (

Elsewhere, 'Espresso' songstress Carpenter has gone one step further by illustrating her Spears-y credentials on stage - covering one of her most popular tunes on tour last year.

"I don't think there's anyone better than Sabrina Carpenter to play Britney," read one seal of approval on Reddit. "She's one of the better actors Disney has put out, in my opinion. She's got the thousand-watt smile, the insane stage presence, the not-so innocent appeal. Plus she can sing damn well. Feels like no-brainer to me."

As well as Sweeney and McRae's names being bandied about, a lover of Rae's work claimed she "needs to play" Spears, end of.

Somebody else reluctantly concurred: "I hate that this is maybe the only person I could agree with in a small way but I don't immediately hate the idea. She would capture her looks and charm quite well."

Who would you choose?

Emma Roberts tosses her hat in the ring for the Britney Spears biopic

Perhaps Britney Spears should be conducting a Britney Bootcamp à la Madonna. Earlier this month, Universal announced an adaptation of Spears' memoir The Woman In Me, to be directed by John M. Chu (Wicked, In The Heights). No doubt the news sent a lot of Hollywood stars running straight to their agents. Not only is it a juicy role (Spears' memoir charts her rise to superstardom, the glare of fame, and her imprisonment in a conservatorship by her family), but a certain cohort of people who grew up with her music will always be huge fans—like Emma Roberts.

After the biopic was announced, Spears' longtime assistant and family friend Felicia Culotta (who expressed her support for Spears in the New York Times doc Framing Britney Spears) suggested to TMZ that Roberts could play the pop star. Roberts' reaction? "I was like, I love her assistant," she told Cosmopolitan. "I mean, it's my true dream to play Britney Spears. It's a rumor, but I hope maybe it'll come true. I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to In the Zone and said, 'I cannot leave this room until I memorize ever y word.'" Roberts still sings Spears' songs to her son in the bath "all the time," admitting to a strong case of "millennial parenting."

Being a millennial would probably be an issue for this film; presumably, they'll want to cast someone younger to portray Spears' come-up. They'll also definitely want someone musical, as the biopic deal included rights to the singer's catalog. (Not to mention, Chu and producer Marc Platt are big musical guys.) Roberts did release music back in her child star days, and having child star experience is actually helpful in understanding Spears as a character. (Roberts was a Nickelodeon kid, while Spears famously starred on The Mickey Mouse Club.) Nevertheless, it's hard to imagine Roberts clinching this casting, which is sure to be a competitive situation.

But, you can never get anywhere in this biz if you don't put yourself out there, so why shouldn't Roberts declare her interest? That's not the only role she's dreaming about, either. "I wanna see a movie about Joan Didion and Eve Babitz. My friend Lili Anolik wrote a book called [Didion & Babitz]. I would die to see it as a movie. And be in it," she revealed in a recent Interview Magazine video. "I wanna play Joan Didion. That's obviously my life's goal." Let's see how well her powers of manifestation work.

Emma Roberts would count herself "Lucky" to step into Britney Spears' shoes for the upcoming movie about her life.

After news of a biopic in the works based on Spears' 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, the singer's former longtime assistant Felicia Culotta told TMZ she thinks Roberts, 33, would be a good casting choice for Spears, now 42, in the film.

"I was like, I love her assistant," Roberts said in a new interview with Cosmopolitan, reacting to the suggestion. "I mean, it's my true dream to play Britney Spears. It's a rumor, but I hope maybe it'll come true."

The Scream Queens alum is a longtime fan of Spears, telling the magazine, "I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to [Spears' 2003 album] In the Zone and said, 'I cannot leave this room until I memorize every word.' "

Roberts went on to share that nowadays, she even sings Spears' songs to her 3-year-old son Rhodes "in the bath all the time."

"I'm always like, 'God, he must think I'm so weird.' That's some millennial parenting," she told Cosmopolitan.

Universal Pictures announced Aug. 1 that it secured the rights to The Woman in Me after a "highly competitive auction," according to a press release. Wicked director Jon M. Chu is set to direct, while Marc Platt will produce. No official casting announcements have been revealed yet.

Spears wrote on X Aug. 1, "Excited to share with my fans that I've been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He's always made my favorite movies ... stay tuned."

Four months earlier, Roberts appeared on Live with Mark and Kelly, where she shared a memory of a childhood birthday when her mom Kelly Cunningham and aunt Julia Roberts surprised her with a call from Spears.

The American Horror Story actress remembered the pop star saying, "Happy birthday, Emma. It's Britney Spears." But she mistakenly thought it was a prank, adding, "I looked at them and hung up and was like, 'Mm-hmm, nice.' And they were like, 'No, that was her.' "

"I was — still am — the biggest Britney Spears fan," Roberts explained. "And I literally started crumbling and I was like, 'Can we get her back on the phone?' They got her back on the phone."

Joked Kelly Ripa, "Star 69 or whatever."

"I was like click right [away]," Roberts added as she indicated hanging up the phone. "I'm so sorry, Britney."

Emma Roberts says ‘my true dream’ to Britney Spears biopic casting rumours

Los Angeles, Aug 30 (IANS): Actress Emma Roberts has reacted to the rumours about being cast in pop star Britney Spears biopic.

After Spears’ assistant suggested the actress play her in a feature adaptation of the singer’s memoir “The Woman In Me”, Roberts seems more than prepared to take on the portrayal, explaining that she’s been preparing for at least 20 years.

“I was like, I love her assistant,” she told Cosmo, reports deadline.com.

“I mean, it’s my true dream to play Britney Spears. It’s a rumor, but I hope maybe it’ll come true. I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to In the Zone and said, ‘I cannot leave this room until I memorise every word.'”

She added of her love for Spears: “I mean, I sing Britney to my son in the bath all the time. I’m always like, ‘God, he must think I’m so weird.’ That’s some millennial parenting.”

Spears’ longtime assistant Felicia Culotta earlier suggested Roberts take on the role as she told TMZ the actress’ child stardom on “Unfabulous” parallels Spears’ own adolescence on the “The All-New Mickey Mouse Club”.

Culotta also suggested Timothée Chalamet play Spears’ ex Justin Timberlake, and Drew Barrymore as the personal assistant herself, who has been working with Spears since 1997.

The actress is known for her work in the horror and thriller genres that have established her as a scream queen. Roberts made her acting debut in the crime film “Blow” in 2001. She went on to star in several films such as “Aquamarine”, “Nancy Drew”, “Wild Child”, “Hotel For Dogs”, “Valentine’s Day”, “It's Kind of a Funny Story” and “The Art of Getting By” to name a few.

Emma Roberts Reacts To Britney Spears Biopic Casting Rumors: “My True Dream”

After a major casting endorsement, Emma Roberts is campaigning for the role of a lifetime.

After Britney Spears' assistant suggested the actress play her in a feature adaptation of Spears' memoir The Woman In Me, Roberts seems more than prepared to take on the portrayal, explaining that she's been preparing for at least 20 years.

"I was like, I love her assistant," she told Cosmo of her reaction to the recommendation. "I mean, it's my true dream to play Britney Spears. It's a rumor, but I hope maybe it'll come true. I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to In the Zone and said, 'I cannot leave this room until I memorize every word.'"

Culotta also suggested Timothée Chalamet play Spears' ex Justin Timberlake, and Drew Barrymore as the personal assistant herself, who has been working with Spears since 1997.

After Spears' memoir debuted last year atop the New York Times' best-sellers list, a studio bidding war ensued. Universal recently won the rights to the project, with Wicked director Jon M. Chu attached to helm the adaptation.

The book traces Spears' upbringing in Mississippi and Louisiana to her rise to fame with the 1999 debut album …Baby One More Time, her 2008 conservatorship and her newfound freedom.

Where Have You Seen Matthew Felker? Baywatch Docuseries Director Was Hot Model in This Famous Music Video (Exclusive)

Matthew Felker is behind the camera for his latest project, but it wasn't long ago that he was starring on the screen.

The 44-year-old director and executive producer of the new docuseries After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun — premiering Aug. 28 on Hulu — recently reminisced with PEOPLE on 20 years ago, when he was a newly minted model and actor starring in Britney Spears's "Toxic" music video.

"It's actually kind of one of the reasons I could identify with the actors," Felker told PEOPLE about how his experience in the music video helped him relate to the actors in After Baywatch. "Granted, I wasn't on the biggest TV show in the world, but it was sort of a moment in pop culture, that video, and it's your 15 minutes of fame type thing."

Felker, who has a steamy makeout with Spears in the memorable 2024 music video, embraces how he made his name in the entertainment industry.

"A lot of people fight the things they kind of become famous for," the director shared. "There are a lot of actors with [Baywatch] that pull away from it because they don't want to be known for it. The Britney Spears thing is flattering. If someone remembers it or knows it or it's great."

Like may of those on the original Baywatch — including Pamela Anderson and Jason Mamoa — Felker came to Hollywood after being discovered, as a model with a dream.

"I just moved to California. I just got off the boat from Wisconsin and showed up on Universal to do that," the model-turned-director recalled of making the music video. "So yeah, to be from the Midwest and have no family ties in the media, just kind of came out here with a dream and showed up on that set. She still was the biggest pop star in the world at the time. So it was very surreal."

While Felker has other initiatives to focus on, he said that every now and again he is reminded of his time as a 20-something making out with one Britney Spears.

"I mean, it'll be on social media or someone who went to high school [with me], they'll send it or they'll send [the] Making the Video from MTV," he said.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Giving a voice to the stars of Baywatch in his new docuseries, Felker said that it is important to show that "life happens" to everyone, regardless of how hard you might try to control it.

"Just because you're a beautiful person doesn't mean that life can't happen, too," the executive producer and director said. "Life happens to a lot of these people, and we see that."

After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun premieres Wednesday, Aug. 28, on Hulu.

What Britney Spears, Madonna and Christina Aguilera Have Said About That MTV Video Music Awards Kiss

Pop culture fans are still "Hung Up" over one infamous kiss decades later.

While the MTV Video Music Awards are meant to be all about the music, the focus quickly turned to some PDA during Britney Spears, Madonna and Christina Aguilera's steamy performance on August 28, 2003.

After Madonna hit the stage to sing "Like a Virgin" and "Hollywood," the music superstar shook viewers when she locked lips with each of her coperformers, Spears and Aguilera, during the show's opening number.

"I've been oblivious until this moment," Madonna said weeks after the performance during an interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show. "I had no idea that it was going to cause the ruckus that it caused. It was just a friendly kiss. I don't know why people are making such a big deal about it."

VMAs PDA Through the Years: From Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey to Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson

While Madonna hasn't addressed the moment in recent years, Spears and Aguilera have shared their thoughts on the major award show moment. Keep reading to see what the artists really thought of the unforgettable performance:

Minutes after the performance, Entertainment Tonight was able to speak with Spears and get her thoughts on the TV moment. "I'm on a very major high right now. I feel very cool," she said with a laugh. "It was amazing. I feel very blessed and it was awesome."

As for Aguilera, she praised Madonna's "very soft lips" and called her a "cute little kisser" after the show. "Madonna is just so professional, so focused, so great and very respectful to me, and it was great," she told ET. "[Madonna] was great to work with, definitely the highlight of my night."

Britney Spears' Big Switch

In her 2023 memoir titled The Woman in Me, Spears recalled rehearsing for the VMAs performance with air kisses. When showtime got closer, however, the vision began to change.

"About two minutes before the performance, I was sitting on the side of the stage and thinking about my biggest performance to date at the VMAs, when I'd pulled off a suit to reveal a sparkly outfit," she wrote, referencing her performance of "Oops!...I Did It Again" in 2000. "I thought to myself, 'I want a moment like that again this year. With the kiss, should I just go for it?'"

Christina Aguilera Recalls Cut-Away From Producers

During the performance, cameras captured Spears' ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake, reacting to the kiss. The moment, however, left many viewers unable to witness Aguilera's kiss with Madonna.

"It was weird," the "Genie in a Bottle" singer said on Radio Andy in 2018 when recalling the cut-away. "I definitely saw the newspaper the next day and it was like, 'Oh well, I guess I got left out of that.' Everything happened so quickly back then and everything was in a whirlwind. I had my own performance of 'Fighter' with Dave Navarro. It was a kick-ass performance. I was OK with that. She could have her kiss. It's fine."

MTV Video Vanguard Winners Through the Years

Christina Aguilera's Magic in a Bottle

Aguilera showed no hard feelings about the VMAs in August 2024 when she called the infamous performance "magical."

"Love a good makeout moment," she told Glamour with a laugh. "I love a theme, I love a concept. I love a specific character to get into. Madonna playing the role of the groom. … We're up here with Madonna and we're part of this huge moment. It was really fun. The energy leading up to it, the rehearsals, everything. It was pretty magical."

A contestant on The Voice Australia has performed Britney Spears anthem Toxic with growls.

17-year-old Mol Turner – from Wollongong, New South Wales – became the first extreme metal vocalist to perform on the Aussie version of the show with her appearance last night (August 26). Watch the beefed-up Spears cover via the video player below.

Turner's rendition appeared to stun The Voice's Australian judges. Her transition from singing to screaming got the four of them, who had their chairs turned away as part of the series' "blind auditions", to headbang and jump up in surprise. Ultimately, though, the only judge to turn their chair and vote to push Turner through to the next round was singer/songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke.

Following her performance airing, Turner published footage of it to Instagram. "made fucking history last night as the first ever extreme metal vocalist on @thevoiceau !!" she commented.

The singer, who also drums in Wollongong band Clueless, went on to say that she auditioned for The Voice "as a joke". "as someone who started screaming alone in my garage after listening to [Suicide Silence's] The Cleansing & [Slipknot's] Iowa a few too many times, I can't believe it has landed me where it has.

"Metal & HXC have defined who I am & in a lot of ways saved my life throughout the past 7 years. This music means absolutely everything to me, and I wouldn't have it any other way."

Turner later signed off: "I cannot express enough how grateful I am for everyone who tuned in and showed their support, it means so fucking much to me.

"THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU !!"

The OG Britney Spears recently made metal headlines as she became embroiled in a short-lived feud with Ozzy Osbourne and his family. The spat stemmed from when the Osbournes critiqued Spears' dancing and social media presence on their podcast.

The singer clapped back: "I'm gonna … tell the Osbourne family who is the most boring family known to mankind to kindly fuck off!"

The Osbournes apologised for their comments on the following episode of their podcast.
