Britney Spears will be heavily involved in her upcoming biopic and she's weighing up a raft of big names to star in the project – with Natalie Portman and Selena Gomez way up high on the list.
Hot off the success of Wicked, which received 10 Academy Award nominations, director Jon M. Chu discussed his next endeavor, which is based on Britney's memoir, The Woman in Me. Speaking with Billboard on the Golden Globes red carpet on January 6, he said the pop princess would be "very involved" in the project.
"I've been a fan since I was young and she was young and she was one of 12 acts at the Shrine Auditorium," Jon, 45, said. "So I want to do her justice and tell her story right. But we'll see. We're developing it now and it's a long road ahead."
"She's going to be very involved," the director added. "I haven't really started anything fully yet, but she will be very involved in this. I have ideas and things, an approach, but it's very early."
A source exclusively tells Life & Style the feeling is mutual, as "Britney wants this movie to be absolutely top notch."
In fact, Jon seems to have been the perfect pick for the job. Despite suffering an Oscar snub for best director for Wicked, he's proven he has what it takes to move an audience, even with source material. "She's got so much faith and respect for Jon and his talent she has no doubt that together they are going to create something next level," the source says.
Britney Spears 'Throwing Out Ideas' With Biopic Director Jon M. Chu (EXCL)
Jon confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter the movie was happening in November, though he admitted the script hasn't even been written yet. This actually allows for a lot more collaboration between the subject and artist, as Jon and Britney bond.
"The wonderful thing is, he's very respectful of her and is allowing her tons of input as they put things together," the insider says. That also means "she's throwing out ideas of what actress she'd like to see portray her."
The two top names from Britney to portray herself on screen: Natalie Portman and Selena Gomez.
"Britney adores Natalie Portman and thinks she's such an incredible actress, she'd love to see her cast and thinks with the right make-up artist she could easily be transformed. The same goes for Selena Gomez. She's someone Britney loves as a person and as an artist, she thinks she's mighty talented and knows she'd also have her own history as a child star to draw on, which would make things easier."
There's no shortage of biopics covering musicians' lives in the works, especially as stars like Timothée Chalamet and Austin Butler bring big awards attention with their performances. Without a doubt, the most important thing about nailing these types of movies is casting the perfect actor to represent the subject.
"They are a long way off casting because a script isn't in the bag yet, but that hasn't stopped Britney from dreaming about the cast."
