Remember the retro-futuristic stewardess frock Britney Spears strutted in during the "Toxic" video? The world has Jeremy Scott to thank for that. Seen Lady Gaga, Madonna or Nicki Minaj in a particularly eye-popping outfit lately? Chances are that was Scott's doing as well. Music informs what the designer calls his "creative mind," so the Hook sat down with the Los Angeles-based fashion star to talk about dressing pop's boldest names, befriending Kanye West, and rocking the runway.

"[Music] is on when I'm designing, it's on [as] a part of my show. It's part of the whole creative process of fashion for me," says Jeremy Scott. A favorite of Katy Perry and Rihanna, among many others, Scott's designs revel in psychedelia and play with patterns and blends a '90s edge with '80s silhouettes.

At every turn, it's the brightness and freshness of the various elements in his work that have attracted so many musical admirers. "I love juxtapositions," he says. "From the music being eclectic to me and my tastes being eclectic -- this idea of things that don't normally go together, or we find unexpected together, or something that has this twist -- that's what excites me and that's what inspires me."

He may call now Kanye West a pal and an inspiration -- after meeting at one of Scott's shows, "we just hung out all day, talking about music and rapping and playing things on his laptop," Scott recalls -- but he feels the original music/fashion icon is Madonna.

"[She] was one of the first to really pull the two worlds of high fashion together with this ultimate pop/ commercial/ world-renowned music," Scott says of the Material Girl. "She created that kind of link, and she did it with so many designers, including myself."
