It’s Britney, B**ch: The Audacity to Call Tate McRae the “Britney Spears of Our Generation” is the Wildest Violation in the Music Industry

Britney Spears is a musician who made a huge impact on both pop culture and the music industry. Fans still consider the singer to be the pre-internet era icon and a face for the teen pop generation of the early 2000s. However, it's undeniable that her popularity has somewhat decreased over the years with new faces joining the music world.

A popular singer Tate McRae became a point of contention for fans when some dubbed her as the newer version of the Criminal singer. People online consider McRae to be a spitting image of Spears, in terms of her music, and this was not digestible for fans of the latter artist.

Respect the Queen: Fans furious over futile comparison

Tate McRae rose to prominence when she collaborated with Billie Eilish and FINNEAS on Tear Myself Apart in 2019. Later, her song You Broke Me First became viral on TikTok and ranked high on the Billboards charts.

According to Rolling Stone, her 2023 album THINK LATER also had positive reviews and helped her gain a footing in the industry. Soon, the young artist began to be regarded as the new face of the pop genre.

However, controversy started when some people claimed her to be the Britney Spears of the younger generation. This supposed honor enraged fans of the OG pop icon who didn't hold a favorable opinion of the newer artist's music.

Spears overcame a lot, both personally and professionally, to be taken seriously in the competitive industry. While McRae may seem to be on a good start with her career it's not wise to compare her to someone who had a lot more impact.

There can only be one: Tate McRae's music style under fire

This was not the first time someone compared the rising singer to the Baby One More Time singer. In the 2024 MTV VMAs, McRae took the stage to pay tribute to the iconic popstar.

According to a Vogue article, the younger artist appeared in front of the media while wearing a very familiar dress. In a bid to pay homage to the princess of pop, McRae recreated one of her most iconic looks.

This outfit referred to Spear's 2001 VMAs' look, a black Dolce & Gabbana lace mini dress. The artist was already called 'Britney Spears 2.0' and this incident only cemented that claim.

However, the comparisons also led to fans becoming more harsh and critical about her music style. Many criticized the singer's peculiar pronunciation while others pointed out the heavy autotune in her songs.

One thing is clear- 'The Britney Army' won't stay quiet when someone tries to claim the throne for younger artists. The popular pop singer may have retired from the industry, but her status remains safe due to her loyal fanbase.
